While trying to execute a search warrant, two FBI officers were killed and three others were wounded in Florida.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning around 6 a.m. local time in Sunrise, west of Fort Lauderdale.
The officers were on duty for alleged possession of child pornography.
How the exchange of fire came about is still unclear.
According to the police, the suspect had holed up in the house.
He was later found dead.
The investigators assume suicide.
"A terrible price they paid"
The fatalities are a 43-year-old woman from Colorado and a 36-year-old from New York.
Both were FBI specialists in the fight against child abuse online.
Representatives of the federal agency spoke of one of the darkest days for the investigators.
According to a report in the New York Times, there had been no more deaths on duty at the FBI since 2008.
"You risked your life and that's a terrible price you paid," said US President Biden, according to a statement.
He expressed his condolences to the families.
A similar argument broke out in a suburb of Miami 35 years ago.
Two FBI officers were killed and five others injured.
