SPIEGEL:

Ms. Bächli-Biétry, what is the difference between a speeder and someone who likes to drive fast?

Bächli-Biétry:

The transition is fluid.

Fast drivers break the rules, but at the same time try not to endanger other road users.

With speeders, the term has a clearly negative connotation, there is also the acceptance of a high risk.

The focus is on ruthlessness and indifference to potentially serious consequences.

SPIEGEL:

Why are young men in particular racing?

Bächli-Biétry:

The cliché »short tail, strong car« is too banal for me.

But these young men have a lack of self-confidence and self-esteem - and they have to compensate for that with their cars.

This is a bluff that is basically supposed to hide a deep uncertainty.

I myself have observed in my practice that speeders, if they have a dog, are more likely to own attack dogs.

It's about the external image.

SPIEGEL:

As a Swiss traffic psychologist, you mainly deal with delinquents in your home country.

How did you come to examine Hamdi H. in the Berlin Ku'damm trial?

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder following a speeding accident.
