The federal government wants to take stronger action against violence against women with disabilities.

In order to prevent such attacks as far as possible, certain, in many cases already existing protection rules should be more firmly anchored in institutions for those affected.

The project is part of a draft law passed by the Federal Cabinet and which also includes further measures.

Women with disabilities are almost twice as likely to be victims of physical violence as other women, as the Federal Commissioner for the Issues of People with Disabilities, Jürgen Dusel, had announced, citing a recent study.

There are now plans to make the protection against violence of people with disabilities, for example in vocational or school rehabilitation, legally more stringent.

This is primarily aimed at women who are more likely to be victims of sexual assault.

The draft law also provides that people who already work in a workshop for disabled people can receive additional training grants.

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) said: "We want to significantly expand the participation of people with disabilities."

There is always criticism of such workshops.

Disability rights activists like Raúl Krauthausen criticize, among other things, the pay of the employees and that people are deported to these facilities instead of being able to participate in the regular labor market.
