Covid-19: several other countries refuse AstraZeneca for the elderly

2021-02-04T18:28:17.176Z

The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Iceland announced Thursday that they will administer the AstraZeneca vaccine only to those under 65

It may well have been authorized without restraint by the European Medicines Agency, the AstraZeneca vaccine does not unleash the crowds.

Even more so when it comes to the elderly.

Like France or Germany, several European countries have also decided to limit the administration of the vaccine to the elderly.

The health authorities of the Netherlands thus recommended Thursday in The Hague to reserve the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 for those under 65 years old only.

Denmark had announced the same decision a little earlier.

Although not in the European Union, Norway and Iceland are working with the European Commission on vaccines.

They, too, have both selected AstraZeneca only for the under 65s.

The director of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Camilla Stoltenberg, explained the imposition of an age limit "not because the vaccine does not work for the elderly but because the documentation is so limited".

"Because the immune system begins to function less well with age, the council is of the opinion that the vaccine is suitable for people up to the age of 65", for its part justified the Dutch Health Council , however, recommending priority vaccination for people aged between 60 and 65 years.

Messenger RNA vaccines for the most vulnerable

In Norway as in Denmark, an exemption will be made among those under 65 years of age for people suffering from underlying conditions and at high risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19: they will continue to receive the vaccines at Messenger RNA from the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna groups, which have proven their effectiveness.

On Wednesday, Belgium announced to limit the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine to under 55s, for lack of sufficient results.

"It may be that, within six or eight weeks, we will have more data, it is quite possible that the opinion will change," said the Belgian Minister of Health.

But tentatively, it is said that the AstraZeneca vaccine will be aimed at those under the age of 55.

Switzerland, she decided to simply wait for more results to accept the vaccine.
