The "day after the corona" is what almost everyone on earth longs for these days, but most of us are already beginning to realize that this plague will not go away as it came to us - all at once.

Even when the threat of the epidemic passes, it will leave behind quite a few health, economic and mental struggles.

One of them, which belongs to the first category - health, can adversely affect male fertility.

A new scientific review published these days in the journal Reproduction, states that infection with Covid-19 can drastically impair male fertility, due to inflammation that causes damage to the testicles.

The review includes a wide range of studies regarding the recently published effects of covid-19 on the reproductive system and also raises speculation about the mechanisms that may explain corona virus infertility.

A number of studies from the past year have indicated a link between virus infection and infertility in both men and women, but the reasons for this have yet to be determined.

The theories put forward in the early stages of the study talked about the ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to infiltrate the male reproductive system, similar to the way the virus returns.

There are certain viruses that attack the testicles in the days after the initial infection and cause the destruction of the supporting tissues and a decrease in sperm output.

The virus itself does not reach the testicles, but there forms an acute inflammation that damages tissues and sperm production.

However, according to the authors of the latest review, this mechanism is unlikely to exist in the case of the corona virus - both recent studies on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and previous studies on its SARS-CoV-1 relative that caused the SARS epidemic at the turn of the millennium have shown that the virus does not Usually found in the testicles (except in a few cases of patients with a particularly high viral load).

By the way, due to the same evidence mainly, it was also determined that sexual contact is not one of the main ways of spreading the virus.

Significant decrease in sperm production

However, these studies do show that infection with the virus can most likely cause acute inflammation of the testicles, also known as: orchitis.

Because studies have not found the presence of the virus itself in the testicles, but a significant decrease in the fertility of things has been described, the researchers estimate that there is a high probability that the fertility damage is a result of the same inflammation, and not a direct damage to the virus.

Not everyone who gets corona will suffer from testicular inflammation or infertility, but it seems to be a relatively common result among those who have suffered severely.

Two of the studies included in the review found evidence of orchitis in the testicles of 90% and 52% of patients who died as a result of severe Covid-19 and whose bodies underwent autopsy.

However, in another study, which was also included in the review, evidence of orchitis was found in only 20% of the bodies analyzed.

There are other reasons that could explain the impairment of fertility due to Covid-19 disease - for example, reasons related to disruptions in the DNA fragmentation of sperm or disorders of the brain's hormonal communication with the gonads - however, at this stage theories are needed to establish more research. .

the result most immediate of the scientific review current is illuminating spotlight on the long-term consequences of Covid-19 for sick and recovering and reading continue to explore the issue of infertility until the science is able to reach the grips of its causes. because we may be about to see the consequences of this epidemic On the fertility of men over several generations.
