Vaccines against Covid-19: where are we with the second injections?

2021-02-04T10:49:10.824Z

More than 100,000 second doses have been administered in France. France is still at the back of the European pack, but more and more i

More than 1.6 million people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in France as of February 2, but how many are they really?

Almost 103,000 only received their two doses, according to figures from Public Health France released Wednesday evening.

At the same date, Spain counts nearly 420,000, Germany more than 600,000 and Italy nearly 680,000. Compared to the population, France is even last in Europe according to the site. OurWorldInData (only the Netherlands do not appear in the ranking yet).

This finding is not necessarily surprising since the country was already at the back of the pack in early January for the first injections.

With the time between the two doses of the Pfizer vaccine - the one mainly used in Europe - most often set at three or four weeks, France is logically lagging behind for the second doses.

But the pace should, logically, intensify in the coming weeks.

The vaccination figures, detailed by sex, age and region, are only made public by Public Health France with a one-day delay.

This lapse of time makes it possible to have consolidated data deemed sufficiently reliable.

Here is precisely where we are on February 2.

50-59 year olds early for the second dose.

In France, more than 1.6 million people have therefore received at least one dose of vaccine against Covid-19.

6.3% of them have already been bitten twice, against 4.4% the day before.

This percentage varies greatly according to the population categories.

As of February 2, nearly 15% of 50-59 year olds and 60-64 year olds who have received at least one dose have already had their vaccination booster, but only 3% of people aged 80 and over, for example.

Covid-19: Macron promises a vaccine for "all French people who want it" by the end of the summer

The vast majority of these 50-64 year-olds are health professionals who have joined the vaccination campaign in large numbers from the first days of January.

At the time, the gap between the two doses had not yet been officially extended to four weeks instead of three.

From the end of January, many of them therefore received their second injection.

Conversely, the campaign started more slowly for the elderly.

In Ehpad, objective at the end of February.

358,093 residents of nursing homes or long-term care units (USLD), priority category for vaccination, have received at least one dose of vaccine.

25,230 of them have already benefited from the two injections.

They represent 7% of those having received at least one dose and 4% of all residents of nursing homes and USLDs (approximately 630,000 people).

These percentages will increase sharply in the coming days since the first injections have especially increased from mid-January.

With a delay between the two doses of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine remaining at three weeks for these categories, more and more people will have to be “stung” a second time in the coming days.

At the same time, the first injections should be completed "at the end of the week," according to the health ministry.

At the end of February or early March, all voluntary nursing home residents could have received both doses.

A "safety net" of several days is nevertheless planned in some establishments.

Corsica in the lead.

It is on the Isle of Beauty that the percentage of the population having already received two injections is the highest… even if it is still very low: 0.27% on February 2.

Normandy (0.25%), New Aquitaine and Bourgogne Franche-Comté (0.24% each) follow.

The latter is well in the lead for people who have received at least one dose (3.72% of the population).

Anti-Covid vaccination: the puzzle of the second dose for the cities of Ile-de-France

Note that it is in Martinique that the percentage of people who received the two doses compared to those who received at least one is the highest (9.9%).

But this concerns small figures, reported to the population: 2,410 people vaccinated, including 239 with the two injections.

All this data is by place of vaccination and not by place of residence, but a source that works directly on the system assures that this bias is minor at the regional level.

A minority of people are a priori supported elsewhere than in the community where they live, hence the fact that we allow ourselves to report the number of vaccinated to the population.
