ROME - 5 thousand tons of food recovered in 2020 and destined to 960 voluntary associations throughout Italy, capable of generating 5.7 million meals, for a value of 26 million euros. It is the result of the Coop 'Buon fine' project, a virtuous process made known on the occasion of the National Day against food waste. Coop donations, committed for years in this direction, have slightly decreased in tons and value (they were 5900 in 2019 for a value of over 30 million euros) by virtue of the particularity of the year just ended and in line with the trend recorded also from the "Waste Zero-Last minute market" campaign report. In contrast, the number of associations that benefited from these donations has grown, of which 70% concern fresh and very fresh products and this explains the particularity of the Coop model compared to others. A zero kilometer donation model because the destination is reached from the 680 points of sale involved through the capillary network of associations and the work of employees and members. In addition to donations, Coop has developed "Eat me immediately", another measure to combat food waste through the sale of products close to expiry at discounted prices (on average 50% at the end of the day) which in 2020 amounted to over 40 million euros.
