Allergic reactions after corona vaccination: What allergy sufferers have to consider

Vaccinations against Corona have been in Germany since the end of December 2020. The vaccines are considered to be well tolerated, but allergic reactions are possible.

Vaccinations against Corona have been in Germany since the end of December 2020.

The vaccines are considered to be well tolerated, but allergic reactions are possible.

  • Three vaccines against Covid-19 are approved in the European Union (EU).

The manufacturers behind the preparations are Biontech / Pfizer, Moderna and Astrazeneca.

The latter vaccine did not receive EU approval until January 30, 2021.

  • In the clinical phase III vaccination studies by the manufacturers Moderna and Biontech / Pfizer, it had been shown that both preparations are compatible and can effectively prevent Covid 19 disease, as reported by the editorial network Germany (RND).

Side effects * were also observed after the vaccination, but these were generally harmless.

  • In very rare cases, however, there were serious complaints after the vaccination, such as allergic reactions such as a feeling of tightness in the throat or shortness of breath due to swelling in the throat.

Any substance can theoretically trigger an allergy.

In the case of vaccinations, components such as animal proteins, antimicrobial agents, preservatives, stabilizers and the antigen contained in vector vaccines are considered to be potential triggers of allergic reactions.

These were also observed after corona vaccinations - but very rarely.

Severe anaphylactic reactions would have been observed in 11.1 cases per million vaccinations with the Biontech mRNA vaccination Comirnaty (also BNT162b2)

, according to the Ärzteblatt, the US Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) cited.

In their study, the authors state that most of the people affected were allergy sufferers.

Severe allergic reactions after corona vaccination in eleven out of a million cases

As Springer Medizin reported, the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) informed in December 2020 of severe allergic reactions in two employees of the British National Health Service (NHS).

After the vaccination with the Biontech preparation BNT162b2, violent allergic reactions occurred, but they could be treated quickly and successfully, they say

.

According to Springer Medizin, both NHS employees were pre-stressed and had previously suffered severe allergic reactions.

The two reported cases led to a government recommendation in Great Britain not to vaccinate people against corona who had a history of severe allergic reactions to a vaccine, drug or food.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) as the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Medicines and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have examined the data situation and, according to the PEI, come to the conclusion: “

According to the current data situation, there is a generally increased risk of serious adverse effects for people with previously known allergic diseases when vaccinated with Comirnaty cannot be derived

.

Therefore, the approval of the European Commission does not provide for a contraindication to vaccination in the case of known allergies to food and medication ”.

In short: an allergy does not speak against a corona vaccination - unless it is an allergy to substances in the vaccine.

Allergic to PEG?

What speaks against a corona vaccination

Anyone who is allergic to a component of the corona vaccination such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) and / or has developed an allergic reaction after the first vaccination dose should not be vaccinated or receive the second dose, as the PEI warns.

Basically, every vaccinated person should be medically monitored for at least 15 minutes after the vaccination.

In order to prevent allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock and to be able to act immediately if the worst comes to the worst, people must be informed about possible allergic reactions after a corona vaccination, as stated in a statement by the German allergological societies AeDA (Medical Association of German Allergologists), DGAKI (Deutsche Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology) and GPA (Society for Pediatric Allergology and Environmental Medicine).

The question of the medical history with regard to allergic reactions to additives used in vaccines such as PEG should also be carried out.

Also, staff who carry out Covid vaccinations must always have the necessary medication ready in the event of a life-threatening anaphylactic shock
