How does the industry minimum wage differ from the statutory minimum wage?
The minimum wage in the construction industry is a so-called industry minimum wage.
This represents the
lowest wage limit for employees in an industry
. An industry
minimum
wage is negotiated in collective bargaining between unions and employers and then declared generally binding.
The
statutory minimum wage
, on the other hand, acts as the lowest wage limit for all employees in Germany, with a few exceptions.
It is currently
9.50 euros
(until June 30, 2021).
If the industry minimum wage is above the statutory minimum wage, the industry minimum wage is always paid.
“In this case, no employer in this industry may reduce the generally binding industry minimum wage with reference to the (lower) statutory minimum wage,” the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) announced on its website.
