SPIEGEL:
Mr. Baron, you are ending your time as editor-in-chief at the Post at a politically difficult time.
Are you worried about your country?
Baron:
I am concerned about the state of our democracy.
She faces enormous challenges.
And as journalists, we play an important role in this democracy: we provide people with the information that is important to them and that they should know.
SPIEGEL:
Millions of Americans today prefer to believe in conspiracy theories instead of reading the news.
How did that happen?
Baron:
That happens in other countries too, I think it's a consequence of the internet.
People today can gather information that only confirms their point of view.
This is also the business model of some media: they deliver so-called messages that give people the impression that their feelings are right, that their instincts are right, that there are others who think exactly like them.
Such media are not bothered by facts or the truth.
