The fire that started on Friday night at the Las Termas de Río Hondo international racetrack caused extensive damage.
The pit building, the press area, the race control area and the VIP boxes were
completely destroyed
.
This was made known by Héctor Farina, the racetrack administrator, in a statement released at dawn this Saturday, after assessing the damage.
The flames began around 11pm on Friday and could only be put out several hours later.
The damages were extensive.
Apparently, the fire originated on the terrace of the VIP boxes.
Operators of a company had been carrying out welding and, apparently, that caused
a short circuit that generated the fire
, which later spread to the pit areas, the press rooms, the race control area and the VIP lounges.
The action of several fire crews prevented the Automobile Museum, the control tower and other important areas from being seriously damaged.
"As much in the museum, as the control tower that are in the extremes, next to other offices, the mini-hospital, there was no considerable damage", indicates the communiqué.
The racetrack has full insurance against fire, so the issue of economic damage is covered in that sense, "but it will surely take a long time to rebuild this important area, necessary for
national and international competitions
."
"Thank God, there were no victims to mourn, and we want to thank all those who collaborated in this incident that generated moments of
great danger
due to the wind that was running," Farina said.
He also thanked the various Fire Department crews, the police officers, the Municipality staff and the racetrack workers, who did everything possible to prevent further damage.
A short circuit would have started the flames.
The international racetrack of Las Termas de Río Hondo is, throughout the year, the venue for important competitions on the national calendar in its different categories.
Also there the
Argentine Republic Grand Prix of the Moto GP is run
.
Finally, Farina said: "We will work from now on to do everything possible to meet the schedules we have planned, including the Moto GP in November."
