According to a new study in "Finger Ratio" - which examined the relationship between the length of the second finger (the teacher) and the length of the fourth finger (the ring finger) and our physical characteristics and behaviors - you can determine what your favorite food, burger or salad is, just by looking at your hands.

No, it is not the volume of the fingers that may indicate your weight and hence your dietary preferences - but the length, and here it certainly determines.

The length of the index finger relative to the length of your ring finger may indicate whether you are more likely to crave "more masculine" foods such as hamburgers and steaks or "more feminine" foods such as salad and diet cola.

Sorry about sexism, but that's what the study claims - not us.

So how does it actually work?

Look at your index finger (second) and ring finger (fourth) with your right hand and see who is taller.

If your ring finger is longer than or equal to the index finger, you prefer more "masculine" foods like hamburger and steak.

On the other hand, if your index finger is longer than the ring finger, you prefer more "feminine" foods like salad and wine.

If you want to make it more accurate, you need to calculate the finger ratio (2D: 4D).

You must first measure the lengths of the index finger and ring finger from the point where the finger connects to the palm of the hand to the tip of the finger - and then take the length of the index finger and divide it by the length of the ring finger.

When the index finger is longer, the ratio is greater than 1.

When the ring is longer, the ratio is less than 1.

Previous studies have shown that the finger ratio is affected by exposure to androgens like testosterone during development in utero.

Low finger ratio (less than 1) indicates higher exposure to testosterone before birth - hence "masculinity".

In the above study, experimenters with low finger ratios chose "more masculine" foods, regardless of their biological sex.

The 2D: 4D ratio has been extensively researched in recent years and has been linked to many other human behaviors and traits.

For example, a low ratio was found to be associated with higher self-confidence, higher reaction speed, better spatial ability and even related to the size of the male penis and higher sperm counts.

A low ratio is also associated with higher levels of competition, and greater success in sports.

In addition, it was found that the length of the fingers in the hand and the relationship between them reveal the sexual orientation of women.

That is, in most women, the index finger (the one after the thumb) and the ring finger (the one on which a wedding ring is placed) are about the same length - or the index finger is longer than the ring finger.

In men, however, the ring finger is longer than the index finger.

A study found that in gay men the distribution of the finger ratio is closer to the female distribution and in lesbian women the distribution of the finger ratio is closer to the male distribution.

This means that if your index finger and ring finger, the boys, are the same length, or your index finger is longer - you may be attracted to men.

If your ring finger, girls, is longer than the index finger - there is a better chance that you are attracted to women.

The proportions between the ring finger and the index finger are affected by the amount of testosterone you have been exposed to in the womb - which is why men and women usually have a different finger ratio.

The new study, conducted by Egged University in Norway, found that people whose thimble is longer than or equal to the index finger would prefer to choose "masculine" foods, but only when they are hungry.

That is, the ratio of fingers did not effectively predict the food choices of seventy people.

The explanation is simple: when we are hungry we are more affected by our biological preferences than when we are full and can make a more considered choice that relies on other factors (health and the like).

Research author Professor Tobias Otterbring of Agder University explained in an interview with the Daily Mail: "This study suggests a broader link between prenatal exposure to testosterone and our eating habits as adults. Because people's declared hunger levels have been linked to different food preferences in our study, this indicates hunger May moderate the link between biologically based factors and consumer choice. "

He added: "This study examined the relationship between personal finger ratio (a biological marker associated with prenatal testosterone exposure) and the tendency to choose 'male' foods - and whether this potential relationship will be mitigated by consumer hunger levels. Lower finger ratio indicates high exposure. More prenatal testosterone and a higher finger ratio indicate lower prenatal testosterone exposure. "

This is how the study was conducted

For the study, the researchers recruited 216 Chinese people, half women and half men, all at an average age of 27. Participants in the study were asked to choose from various food items already categorized by a different array of volunteers as male or female, on a scale of 1 to 7 (1 = female; 7 = male).

These food items included shrimp (female) or lobster (male), diet cola (female) or regular cola (male) and Caesar salad (female) or hamburger with fries (male).

There is a recurring motif in the "masculine" food items compared to the "feminine" ones - they tend to be bigger, fatter and less healthy, indicating that men like to be perceived as risk takers when it comes to eating.

Among the participants, the ratio of the fingers, their gender identity as reported and their degree of hunger during the study, before making their food choices was measured.

The results showed that regardless of gender, hungry consumers with a low (male) finger ratio made more masculine food choices.

This relationship applies to both men and women.

In other words, finger ratio was a more effective tool for predicting their food choices than for predicting their true sex.

However, hunger seemed to be the reason this effect worked, because when these were seventy, they chose according to their personal preference and less according to biologically based factors.

The team also found that consumers with low (female) finger ratio did not change their choices according to their hunger levels.

One limitation of the study is that participants reported for themselves their subjective sense of hunger, which may not have been credible.

Professor Otterbring also acknowledged the limitations associated with the finger ratio.

"It is indeed a controversial measure, with some studies finding a link between finger ratio to testosterone levels and other studies that have failed to find such a link," he said, "so this link should be treated with due caution."

This is how you measure yourself

Previous studies have found additional behaviors that the finger ratio may indicate.

Here are some of them:

  • Novels - Women whose ring finger is longer than the index finger are more likely to have romances.

  • Sexuality - Women whose ring finger is longer than the index finger are more likely to be attracted to women than men.

  • Voice - Babies are more likely to have a squeaky voice if their index finger is longer than the ring finger.

  • Employment - Women whose thimble is longer than the index finger are more likely to engage in more feminine jobs.

  • Collaborative - Children whose ring finger is longer than the index finger are less likely to share things with their peers.
