A 24-year-old fisherman from Colombia arrived at the hospital on Friday, January 23, having difficulty breathing.

The doctors hurried to take an X-ray and found it hard to believe what they saw when they noticed an 18-inch-long live fish stuck in his throat.

In a quick medical procedure they pulled the fish in its entirety from the young man's throat and documented every moment of this extraordinary event.

The fisherman, whose name was not released in the local media, was fishing for food for his family on a lake in the town of Fiji, in Magdalena County, when he suddenly caught a fish from the 18-inch-long plum family.

Even before he could do anything with the fish he caught, he threw the rod back into the water and immediately caught a second fish.

To raise the fish caught with his rod he had to use both hands and did not know where to place the first fish he had caught in the meantime.

In a moment's decision he chose to grab the first fish with his teeth and began working on capturing the second - however the fish in his mouth was still alive and trying to break free and instead of returning to the water - he slipped into the fisherman's throat and got stuck in his esophagus.

After unsuccessful attempts to get the stuck fish out on their own, the fisherman was forced to arrive at Santander Herrera Hospital and had difficulty explaining his condition to doctors.

The medical staff took an X-ray and realized he was choking on a live fish.

A hard-to-watch video posted last week on the net shows the quick medical procedure in which the doctor removed the fish from the fisherman's throat with a pair of forceps.

He told the camera: "Ladies and gentlemen, something unusual. A young man in Fiji swallowed a fish. We removed the foreign object from his esophagus."

At that moment, the doctor pulled out a bleeding fish covered in saliva that was about 18 cm long. The fisherman was hospitalized for follow-up at the hospital over the weekend, but it was not reported that he was suffering from a serious injury.
