Street protests in Chile have turned into violence.

Protests and riots broke out after a fatal police operation against a street artist in the small town of Panguipulli, in the south of the country.

Protesters clashed with police in several cities in Chile.

Last Friday, a police officer shot a street performer at an intersection in central Panguipulli after the juggler defied a control.

After two warning shots on the ground, the young man stormed towards the police officer.

This then opened fire.

The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation.

The police officer involved was taken into custody.

The Interior Ministry directed the police to cooperate in investigating the incident.

The otherwise quiet small town has been experiencing violent riots since the fatal incident.

Several public buildings, including the town hall, were set on fire.

Rodrigo Delgado, Interior Minister Chile:

“We always regret it when such an operation results in the death of a person.

As a government we guarantee to do everything possible to ensure that the judiciary and the public prosecutor's office are provided with all information about what happened in Panguipulli yesterday

The riots are a new level of escalation in the ongoing protests in Chile.

For over a year now, people in Santiago have been demonstrating for reforms in the pension, health and education systems every Friday.

The police are also repeatedly criticized.

The Carabineros crack down on demonstrators critical of the government - often using violence.
