Animal Crossing video game tops the best-selling cultural goods in France in 2020

2021-02-08T18:31:13.690Z

The Animal Crossing, Fifa 21 and Mario Kart 8 games do better than the latest novels by Joël Dicker and Guillaume Musso. The acclaimed PS5 console suffered from shortages.

The video game is definitely one of the big winners of the year 2020. The GFK institute revealed on Monday the evolution of the market for cultural goods (books, video, music, video games) in France during this particular year.

Its data illustrates the strong resilience of gaming, driven both by the release of the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, but also by the confinements and marketing of games that have become phenomena, such as Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing

is thus the cultural good which has sold the best in France this year, with more than a million units sold in the trade.

To this figure must be added digital purchases on the Nintendo eShop platform, a figure that the Japanese company does not communicate.

Console purchases in great shape

It will be necessary to wait until the beginning of March to know the final ranking of the best-selling video games in France in 2020, with the precise figures.

The SELL (union of video game publishers) will present on this occasion all the figures for the gaming market, taking into account purchases in physical and digital format.

The GFK study, however, gives a foretaste of the major trends.

Thus, boxed game purchases fell by 4% in 2020, a year marked by the closure of stores and specialized departments in November, a crucial month in this sector.

By comparison, the DVD-BluRay market collapsed by 27%, and the CD market by 20%.

GFK notes that purchases of physical games increased by 4% during the first confinement, and by 19% during the end of the year holidays.

Purchases of game consoles are in great shape and weighed in at 667 million euros (+ 9% compared to 2019), of which 121 million are attributable to the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.

GFK confirms that the latter suffered from inventory problems, with a collapse in sales from the second week of marketing, due to lack of restocking.

The demand is however there.

According to a survey by the institute, 23% of French people intend to purchase a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series in the future.

But the appetite for consoles was noted long before the release of these new generation machines.

During the first lockdown, console purchases jumped 70%.

Nintendo's Switch has particularly benefited from this dynamic.

According to our information, it sold nearly 1.5 million copies in 2020.
