Health communicates more than 47,000 infections and 909 deaths in a weekend

The global incidence of cases continues to decline, but the ministry asks "not to lower our guard" and warns that Spain continues to have very high levels of epidemic risk

The third wave has a strong impact on the number of deaths.

After skyrocketing incidence, admissions and admission to intensive care, the virus's stakes are now reflected in the death curve: the Ministry of Health has reported 909 deaths since Friday, the highest number of deaths reported in a weekend. a week from the first wave.

The Government has also reported 47,095 new infections, although the cumulative incidence of positives maintains its downward trend: 667.33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days (on Friday it was 750.77).

The director of the Center for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, warned this Monday, however, that "you cannot lower your guard."

"We can foresee that the incidence will decrease, but practically all the communities are in a very high risk situation," he warned.

  • The incidence of the coronavirus falls throughout Spain

  • The worst week of the third wave closes with 3,067 deaths from covid

Last Monday, Health reported 762 deaths over the weekend.

On Tuesday, this indicator reached the daily peak since the first wave with 724 deaths and the data will continue to rise.

"We will not see a clear significant decline in deaths until the end of the week," admitted Simón.

The contagion curve has been declining for a few days, but the incidence continues to rise, still far from what Health already stipulated as extreme risk: 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days.

Except for the Canary Islands (157 cases per 100,000), all the communities far exceed the maximum thresholds of the ministry to keep the pandemic at bay.

The Valencian Community, with an incidence of 995, is in the lead.

La Rioja and Castilla y León are also above 900 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks.

The fall in incidence, in fact, is not yet reflected in hospitals, where care pressure persists.

Revenues are reducing, but at a very slow pace: there are 27,739 people with covid hospitalized, which means that one in five conventional beds is still occupied by a patient infected with coronavirus.

Simón has ensured that entries into intensive care (ICU) are also decreasing and the peak of critically ill patients could have been reached, but warns: “Today's data are slightly lower in ICU occupation, but we are under enormous pressure.

These are very high data that make many hospitals have to maintain the reprogramming of routine activity and it is a problem for the health system ”.

According to Health, there are 4,732 people with covid in critical condition, which means that 43% of ICU beds are occupied by patients with coronavirus.

With this scenario on the table and the certainty that the death toll will continue to rise in the coming days, the director of the CCAES has insisted on not relaxing preventive measures.

In fact, Simón has not ruled out the rise of a fourth epidemic wave, although less serious, he said, thanks to the effect of vaccination.

“A fourth wave is possible.

It will depend on how we go down in this, how low transmission level we get with this and how it evolves in the coming weeks.

If there is a fourth wave, since there will be more immune population, the probability that this wave is large and fast decreases.

A smaller and slower wave is likely, which gives us scope to apply progressive control measures ”.

Simón has warned, however, that new variants of the virus will also play an important role in a possible fourth wave.

"If the British variant occupies the space within our territory, that expected fourth slower and more progressive wave could accelerate a bit," he indicated.

Health has confirmed 479 cases of the British variant, although it admits that there are many more.

Two cases of the South African variant have been detected and there is another person infected with the Brazilian variant, which is more virulent, Simón said.
