ROME - NASA has promised a $ 500,000 prize to those who will be able to invent the food of the future, foods destined for man's missions on "Mars and elsewhere" that are healthy and tasty and that can be produced in case of travel interstellar is very long.
Launched in mid-January in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency and on the occasion of NASA's centenary, the Deep Space Food Challenge will end on 30 July.
The goal to be achieved in just 7 months is ambitious.
To create, according to the US Space Agency website, new technologies or food production systems that require minimal resources and produce minimal waste, while providing safe, nutritious and tasty food for long-lasting human exploration missions.
According to NASA, if it were possible to arrive at such a system it would also be a big step forward for food production all over the world, but above all in extreme environments, regions with limited resources or places devastated by natural disasters.
