Snow-covered Leipzig-Rückmarsdorf station: The onset of winter leads to severe restrictions nationwide.

"Due to extreme storms", train cancellations and delays will probably continue for the entire day in large parts of the country, Deutsche Bahn announced.

Jena in the snow: More than 30 centimeters of fresh snow fell overnight in the Thuringian city - similar to many places in a strip from North Rhine-Westphalia via Lower Saxony to Thuringia and Brandenburg.

According to the R + V insurance, the weight of the snow load means that there is an increased risk of collapse, for example for porches and garages.

"If the snow is very wet, a ten-centimeter-high snowpack can weigh well over 40 kilograms per square meter."
