(ANSA) - ISTANBUL, 09 FEB - Iran started the vaccination campaign for Covid-19 this morning.
The first administrations in a Tehran hospital were broadcast live on state TV.
"We begin our national vaccination in memory of the martyrdom of health workers," said President Hassan Rohani, connected by videoconference with the ceremony.
In this first phase, aimed at health workers, the Russian Sputnik V vaccine is used, of which Tehran received the first supplies last Thursday. Further deliveries are expected on February 18th and 28th, for an expected total of 2 million doses. By February, Iran is also expecting 4.2 million doses of AstraZeneca's serum through Covax, the mechanism backed by the World Health Organization to help distribute vaccines to countries with supply problems. The Islamic Republic denounced difficulties in acquiring anti-Covid serums due to American sanctions. Since the start of the pandemic, Tehran has registered over 1.4 million cases and 58,000 victims.
