Next in line is the US, where the situation is already difficult anyway

The British mutation continues to cause trouble around the world, and not just here.

According to a new study in the British variant is now expanding rapidly in the US, corona-stricken, and doubles every ten days.

The British variant has about eight mutations in the spike protein - which the virus uses to infect and invade human cells.

These mutations appear to allow it to spread more quickly and efficiently compared to previous forms of the virus.

It was first spotted in September 2020 in the UK, and just two months later it became the dominant version in the country.

According to the World Health Organization the version has now been identified in at least 80 countries around the world.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicted that the British variant would become the dominant strain in the US by March, and this study indicates that their prediction is coming true. The researchers examined data from half a million U.S. positive test samples collected since July 2020. It apparently reached the U.S. toward the end of November and spread to at least 30 countries on the continent by January. "Our research shows that the U.S. is on a similar trajectory as other countries where the mutation has quickly become the dominant version of SARS-CoV-2."

"They also found that while the version is still relatively low in the U.S., it is more than 35 to 45 percent more contagious than previous forms of the virus and appears to double every 10 days across the country.
