Graduations and Corona: The Abi is dead. Long live the Abi

The high school graduation was never fair, but this year it takes place under even more unfair conditions. Which alternative formats could save the final exam? Four ideas.

If he could, Dieter Dohmen would really shake up the system of final exams in schools.

And when, if not this school year and in the midst of the pandemic, could the pressure to change be greater?

"The corona crisis has shown us the weaknesses of the education system - and we see these weaknesses and deficiencies very clearly when looking at the final exams," says Dohmen, director of the Research Institute for Educational and Social Economics (FiBS) in Berlin.

"Changes to the final exams are necessary and desirable - and not all that difficult to implement," says the educational researcher.

For example, with an extended certificate that goes well beyond grades and is similar to the written assessments that are distributed in elementary school: "It would make perfect sense to certify the graduates of their qualitative skills in more detail."

In this way, more secondary school and secondary school graduates could possibly start regular training.

"Because your skills and abilities will then be visible to potential employers on the certificates," says Dohmen.

And that makes the application easier.

So far, after finishing secondary school and especially after leaving school, many students have switched to a vocational transition system, an emergency educational system with - at best - intermediate qualifications and unclear prospects.
