After a year in which everything was different than usual on the German-speaking theater stages, different rules than usual also applied to the selection of the "most remarkable productions" invited to the Theatertreffen. For the first time it was the jury, according to the organizers allows video sightings;
Livestream and videos were included in the selection.
Accordingly, two productions whose premieres took place online are also invited to the stage festival.
That applies to “The Magic Mountain” at the Deutsches Theater and the hybrid format “Show Me A Good Time” by the artist collective Gob Squad, said festival director Yvonne Büdenhölzer.

The quota for women, which the jury set itself in 2019, was thus once again met.
It is also to be extended by two years and thus also apply to the following new jury.
So far, the quota has not meant that significantly more women are allowed to stage in German theaters, it said.
“2020 was an extremely difficult year for the art and culture scene,” said Büdenhölzer: “That is precisely why it is important to us to discuss and appreciate those productions and projects that were nevertheless able to be realized.
And also to talk about what was possible and what was impossible. «Whether and in what form the Theatertreffen planned for May in Berlin could take place remained open for the time being.
The jury, consisting of Cornelia Fiedler, SPIEGEL author Wolfgang Höbel, Georg Kasch, Andreas Klaeui, Sabine Leucht, Petra Paterno and Franz Wille, viewed and discussed a total of 285 productions from Germany between January 27, 2020 and February 5, 2021, Austria and Switzerland.
