After the American Civil War, veteran
Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks)
travels
from place to place to bring residents the latest news from around the world.
On the way he picks up a young girl named
Johanna (Helena Zengel)
who has lost her family of German
descent
and her Indian
foster parents

Kidd makes it his business to bring Johanna to relatives.
The project soon turns out to be life-threatening for both of them.
