  • B.1.1.7 and 501.V2: These sequences of numbers and letters stand for virus mutations which, according to current knowledge, are probably more contagious than the "original virus".

    B.1.1.7 is the virus mutation detected for the first time in Great Britain.

    An infection with the mutant 501.V2 was diagnosed for the first time in South Africa.

  • According to the editorial network in Germany, this does not mean that the virus variants originated in the respective countries.

    They are nicknamed "South Africa Virus" or "British Virus *" because the mutated viruses were detected there for the first time.

  • They should be more contagious than the original virus and its previous mutations, but not more dangerous.

The coronavirus mutation 501.V2, first detected in South Africa, was not only detected in Baden-Württemberg.

According to virologist Christian Drosten, however, one should remain vigilant, especially with regard to travel.
