The European Parliament also observed a minute of silence to remember the victims of sinkholes.

This was announced by the president of the Eurocamera David Sassoli opening today's session.

"On the occasion of the 'Day of Remembrance' which is celebrated today, I would like to recall the memory of the Italians, of all the victims of sinkholes and of the exodus from their lands of the Istrians, Rijekers and Dalmatians after World War II", Sassoli said.

"What happened, ignored or even denied for many years, forces us to keep our memory alive - he added -. Those who, like us, defend the values of peace, justice and freedom have the duty to honor the victims of this tragedy. The construction of Europe is not only an extraordinary political response to those persecutions but it is also one of the fundamental engines of the integration process between democratic countries ".
