On maps, the island is little more than a tiny, narrow line in the middle of deep blue - but the uninhabited island of Anguilla Cay in the Caribbean was apparently enough to survive.

As the US Coast Guard announced, three shipwrecked people have now been rescued from the island.

According to their own statements, they stayed on Anguilla Cay for 33 days.

The fact that the two men and a woman from Cuba did not have to wait any longer on the island between Cuba and the US state of Florida is apparently due to their own efforts.

The crew became aware of the people by waving flags and a large cross, said the pilot of the Coast Guard helicopter to the local broadcaster WPLG.

The helicopter then flew over the island again and called for reinforcements.

Another crew later dropped water, food and a radio over the island.

The US Coast Guard posted a video of the operation on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

However, it took another hour before the shipwrecked could be rescued.

Finally, the Coast Guard announced that the three Cubans were recovered without injuries and taken to a medical care center.

In addition, the authority published a photo that apparently shows a provisional shack of the stranded.

As reported by the AP news agency, the Cubans apparently capsized their boat in bad weather.

They had finally saved themselves by swimming on the island.

As local media reported, the survivors of the helicopter crew reported that they ate mussels and rats on the island.

Apparently they would not have lasted much longer: According to their statements, there was no drinking water on the island.
