"We do not want to let go of the students": in France, schools remain open at all costs

2021-02-11T05:31:09.215Z

While classes have been closed for almost a year in the United States because of Covid-19, France has decided to keep its own

“We are civil servants.

So, we work.

Alice, a school teacher in the Hauts-de-Seine, is not used to looking at her navel.

“The Covid-19 is rotting my life, that's for sure!

But we don't want to let go of the students, we have to hold on, she confides.

Our vocation is to carry the kids… at all costs!

"

From this point of view, France is an exception.

In the United States, many schools have been empty for almost a year: half of the 55 million students have never returned to class since March.

Schools in the UK and Germany are also closed.

"Hold" is the watchword of Jean-Michel Blanquer, the Minister of Education.

He hammers it: generalized closure, he does not want it, even in the event of re-containment.

This is the position he defends with Emmanuel Macron, with the support of the French Pediatric Society, opposed to the closure for fear of the psychological impact on young people, but against the advice of specialists like the epidemiologist Renaud Piarroux or infectious disease specialist Jean-François Delfraissy.

Continuing to teach is sometimes a balancing act, with health protocols that change every two weeks.

“We do what we can for a lot of things.

The recess is staggered and when the courtyard is large, the classes are divided into several sectors.

The kids play the game, it's amazing.

Also for washing hands, even if hydroalcoholic gel is sometimes used to save time, especially in small schools where there is only one tap, ”says Fabrice, replacing in Yonne.

"I no longer have the same view on the instits since the start of the crisis"

“Hand washing takes 40 minutes of my day over a 6 hour day, it's very complicated!

Alice said.

And yet, the staff made do with it.

“I can feel the colleagues I meet happy to come and work.

Yes, it's boring to have the mask on all day, to watch out for everything, to think about these protocols which are added as you go.

Everyone is fed up, but I don't feel depressed, ”Fabrice still analyzes.

Better: some have strengthened ties with students.

“Every day, I have a teenager who says to me:

We want to take lessons with you, we don't want to be re-defined and work in isolation

, welcomes Tiphaine, teacher in Seine-et-Marne.

I feel like I am much more of a resource person than before.

“Parents, we applaud, too.

"It's a real relief that the school remains open unlike last spring, because it allows us to work, which is impossible at home with a three-year-old child," explains a father from Yvelines.

Same story with Erwann, father of a CP from Seine-et-Marne.

“I no longer have the same outlook on the instits since the start of the crisis.

Seeing them take our kids with so many constraints, there is a sacrifice side for the rest of the country.
