From the beginning of the epidemic, reality has shown that older people, probably those with background illnesses, are at a higher risk of getting corona.

A new study of millions of medical records in the United States found that people with dementia had a higher risk of contracting the corona virus, and were more likely to be hospitalized and die from the virus, than people without dementia.

Their risk could not be fully explained by common characteristics of people with dementia who are known risk factors for corona: old age, nursing home living and background conditions such as obesity, asthma, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Even after the researchers cursed these variables for the study, Americans with dementia were still twice as likely to get Covid-19 from last summer.

"The study is pretty compelling in that it suggests there is something about dementia that makes you more vulnerable," said Dr. Christine Yaffe, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study.

The study found that people of African-American descent with dementia were almost three times more likely than white people with dementia to be infected with the virus, a finding that experts believe likely reflects the fact that this population was disproportionately affected during the epidemic.

"This study highlights the need to protect patients with dementia, especially vulnerable populations," the authors wrote.

The study was led by researchers from Case Western Reserve University who analyzed electronic health records of 61.9 million people aged 18 and over in the United States from February 1 to August 21, 2020. Data collected came from 360 hospitals and 317,000 health care providers in all 50 The countries.

Rong Shu, a professor of biomedical informatics at Case Western and lead author of the study, said there were speculations as to whether people with dementia were more prone to infection and damage from coronary heart disease.

"We thought, 'We have the data, we can just test this hypothesis," said Dr. Xu.

The researchers found that of 15,770 patients listed sources analyzed, 810 also suffered from dementia. When the researchers adjusted the general demographic factors - age, Sex and race - They found that people with dementia had more than three times the risk of developing Covid-19. infected.

but these patients are not vulnerable group only original recently discovered. just this week published a new study included 7,400 participants in new York, all tested verified its origin, the findings showed that the chances of patients with schizophrenia die beams three times higher in relation to people infected and diagnosed with the disorder .
