F1 "intends" to organize a GP in Portugal, in Portimao, on May 2, the date scheduled for a race whose venue remains to be confirmed, announced today the championship promoter and the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
"Formula 1 intends to organize a race in Portugal on the dates already scheduled in the calendar.
The final agreement remains subject to a contract with the promoter" is specified in a press release, after having announced it to the teams at a meeting of the FIA Commission ;; F1 .
The holding of a Grand Prix in Portugal was not guaranteed while the country is on the UK "red list", where most of the teams are based, due to the health situation linked to Covid.
The May 2 slot remained vacant following the cancellation of the 2021 Vietnam Grand Prix for the second consecutive year.
The Portimao circuit hosted the first GP in its history in October 2020, after a major overhaul of the calendar due to the pandemic.
The 2021 F1 season kicks off in Bahrain on March 28 and still boasts the record of 23 races, despite the postponement of the Australian and Chinese Grand Prix originally scheduled for March 21 and April 11.
