Larry Flint, the founder and controversial publisher of Hazler magazine, passed away at the age of 78, his brother to the Washington Post magazine confirmed tonight. The brother, Jimmy Flint, did not say the cause of death.

Flint has been considered a key figure in the American porn industry for nearly five decades.

He founded Hassler magazine in 1974 and later expanded his activities to establish three television channels, also pornographic, called Hassler TV.

His activities in the field created many opponents for him and led to many legal wars between him and the justice system in the United States, which revolved around issues such as conservatism, censorship and freedom of expression.

These were documented in Milos Furman's 1996 film, "Larry Flint - The Man and the Scandal."

In the film, Flint was played by actor Woody Harrelson, and even appeared in it himself - as a judge at his trial.

He was born in 1942 and grew up in extreme poverty, until he enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 15, when he presented a forged birth certificate. As a newsletter promoting its strip club network, but the great popularity it gained caused Flint to expand into a real magazine. Until then, it featured blatant nude photos, alongside paparazzi photos of Jackie Kennedy.

As mentioned, the publication of the magazine brought Flint lengthy legal battles as well as haters and opponents.

In March 1978, while out of a court hearing in Georgia, he was shot and remains disabled ever since, from the waist down.

It later emerged that the shooter was serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin, who confessed to the act only many years later.

In his confession, Franklin said he did so after a series of interracial photos that appeared in the magazine infuriated him.

Franklin was sentenced to death, which Flint himself opposed.

His life continued to be full of happenings and scandals even in the following decades.

It has expanded its business to a network of sex toy stores, casinos and a number of other magazines and clubs.

Alongside this his personal life knew storms, when his fourth wife, Althea Lizor, drowned in the bath of their home on the estate where they lived in Bel Air.

In addition to all this, Flint tried his hand at politics.

In 1984 he ran for president of the United States and ran in the election for a short time.

In 2003 he applied to be governor of California, but did not win the election.

In recent years he has spoken out strongly against Donald Trump's presidency, and even offered a $ 10 million cash prize for anyone who would provide him with evidence that would lead to the ouster of the former president.

Flint left behind Brios, his fifth wife, and seven children.

His daughter Lisa Flint Fugate died in 2014.
