VIDEO. Thailand: paralyzed dogs rediscover the pleasure of running

2021-02-11T15:16:15.612Z

In Thailand, a refuge which treats and feeds abandoned animals, also gives the chance to disabled dogs to be able to walk again.

It is a refuge like no other.

In Chonburi, a Thai province located south-east of Bangkok, stray dogs with paralyzed hind legs have found the pleasure of walking and running thanks to small wheelchairs adapted to their morphology.

“Without us and our support, these dogs would not have had a chance to stay alive.

Without being able to walk or run, they would be doomed to die on the side of the roads.

Thanks to our care and these little rear wheels, they are happier than ever, ”says Christopher Chidichimo, the coordinator of the refuge.

“They even run very fast!

We can't follow them, ”adds the local dog handler, Phanuphong Borphuak.

Managed by a foundation called The Man That Rescues Dogs, the shelter was created by Swedish restaurateur Michael J. Baines, who moved to Chonburi in 2002. Dismayed by the poor condition of stray dogs in the country, he started treating him after his job.

Little by little, he had the idea of creating a reception structure, called "Le Sanctuaire", to give a second chance to these animals, some of whom are severely disabled.

An uncertain future because of the pandemic

Only today, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the future of this refuge is uncertain.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we have lost 80% of visitors who come for adoption.

Donations also fell 40%.

And we have a hard time finding volunteers, ”worries the shelter coordinator.

Funds are so scarce that the shelter has had to suspend its monthly sterilization and sterilization campaign for stray dogs.

In 2017, Thailand had around 800,000 stray cats and dogs and could see their numbers reach 2 million within ten years.
