The legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea is dead. The musician and composer died of cancer at the age of 79, as announced on Thursday on his official Facebook page.

The disease was therefore only diagnosed very recently.

Corea died on Tuesday.

Born in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Corea was one of the most important representatives of rock jazz.

In his long career, he won 23 Grammys.

He played with the trumpeter Miles Davis, among others, and in 1971 founded the formation "Return To Forever".

As a composer, Corea wrote, among other things, the Latin jazz classic »Spain«, probably his most famous hit.

In Germany in particular, Chick Corea was highly controversial because of its membership in Scientology.

Corea dedicated several compositions to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and praised him as a "great artist."

When the musician wanted to perform in Stuttgart in 1993, he was excluded from the organizer after the state government of Baden-Württemberg threatened to cut the subsidies for the event.

Corea sued the state government, but the lawsuit was dismissed.
