It remains wintry in large parts of Germany. Temperatures on the Rhine should rise a little again during the day - but at night it remains bitterly cold.

The days remain frosty: "Germany is still firmly in the clutches of the cold spike› Helida ‹over Scandinavia," said meteorologist Robert Hausen from the weather forecast center of the German Weather Service (DWD).

The arctic polar air over Germany can regenerate itself over and over again over the large areas of snow.

Therefore it will remain "largely permanently frosted until Sunday."

On Sunday it will probably be a little warmer.

On the Rhine, the daytime temperatures could slip back into positive territory for the first time in around a week.

In the nights, however, it remains bitterly cold: "Above the snow surfaces, minus 15 degrees must be assumed, with longer clearing up to minus 20 degrees," said Hausen.

The extreme cold is a thing of the past.

In the night of Wednesday the temperature had dropped to minus 27 degrees.

The snowfall is decreasing more and more, only between the Baltic Sea and the Ore Mountains there is still a little white.

In the rest of the country, the sun is coming through more and more.

When the sun is shining, the weekend temperatures are around minus one degree, according to DWD.

Because of the strong gusty east wind, it feels like minus ten degrees or colder.

According to the DWD, it is still very uncertain whether it will be significantly warmer in the next week.
