Coca-Cola will test paper bottles

2021-02-12T11:40:22.151Z

The Coca-Cola Company, which has admitted producing 3 million tonnes of plastic per year, has been accused by the environmental association Greenpeac

Is the soda giant Coca-Cola at the foot of a revolution in the packaging of its drinks?

The company will launch in Hungary, during the second quarter, a first test of paper bottles with 2000 consumers.

This prototype bottle was developed thanks to a partnership between scientists from the Coca-Cola research and development center in Brussels and the Danish company The Paper Bottle Company (Paboco).

“The current prototype consists of a paper shell with a plastic inner layer and a recyclable plastic cap.

The ultimate goal is to develop a bottle that can be fully recycled like paper, ”explains the soda producer.

“A paper bottle opens up a whole new world of packaging possibilities, and we are convinced that paper packaging has a role to play in the future,” said Stijn Franssen, Head of Innovation in Business. packaging for EMEA R&D at Coca-Cola.

In terms of the environment, Coca-Cola, which has been accused by Greenpeace of being the biggest polluter on the planet in terms of plastic with three million tonnes per year, has decided to set itself ambitious goals since 2018 to change things.

The Coca-Cola Company has decided in Western Europe to collect 100% of its packaging by 2025. Coca-Cola also wants all of its packaging to be 100% recyclable (currently 97% recyclable) and that all its plastic packaging contains at least 50% recycled material by 2023. For glass bottles or aluminum cans, this packaging is already 100% recyclable.

The concern mainly arises from the collection of this packaging.

In addition, Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) also announced at the beginning of 2020 that it wants to invest 250 million euros over three years in its European sites to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
