The discovery of a new lake has raised fears in Uttarakhand about the possibility of a further avalanche on the Rishiganga River valley, which was hit Sunday by a flood after the collapse of an overhanging glacier.
The state authorities organized an aerial inspection with helicopters and a high-altitude consortium of climbing geologists to study the situation.
According to the NDTV television network, the new basin was identified 5km north of the already affected valley, by YP Sundriyal, a geologist who, after climbing to high altitude with the help of a group of locals, launched the 'alarm: "the lake - he says - could not hold up because it has no banks and cause a second avalanche of water".
The recovery operations of the missing in the valley hit by the avalanche, almost two hundred, are still in progress and there are 36 confirmed victims.
