In 2030, 5 billion people will live in urban agglomerations, 60% of the world population: this is why "sustainable cities and communities" has been included in point 11 of the sustainable development goals set by the UN.

It is in this context that the study - presented during the ANSA 2030 Forum - "How sustainable are our cities?"

- created by

Save The Planet

Onlus and

JTI Italia

with the

patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea

which aims to underline the importance of a joint reflection on the aspect that the cities of the future will have to assume.

The object of the research are the 14 Italian metropolitan cities compared according to three relevant indicators (belonging to the ISO 37120: 2018 standard):

the pressure of tourist flows, the presence of green areas and the treatment of solid urban waste

.

Three key indicators around which to build the sustainable and responsible cities of tomorrow.

"Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable" is the priority of the new development model since cities are the main engine of global GDP and face various difficulties in the management of urban life including the uncontrolled production of

waste.

"notes the study that highlights the historic gap between the north and south of the country. Venice, Milan and Bologna distance the metropolitan cities of the south for the percentage of municipal solid waste recycled; among these, Bologna converts 85% of waste into energy by allocating just under 10% in landfills. The black jersey goes to Sicily on whose territory there are no waste energy production plants, so much so that about 70% of these are simply disposed of in landfills.

Rome, Venice and Milan rank on the podium by number of

tourist presences

. The lagoon city stands out in first place if we consider the tourist presences in relation to the number of inhabitants. It therefore emerges clearly that cities that are also tourist hotspots have a duty more than others to develop effective strategies for a economy respectful of the environment, especially with a view to raising awareness of visitors who occasionally attend the municipal area.

the quality of the will

ta in the city of the future will also depend on the

amount of green areas

.

The theme focuses on the need on the part of local administrations to protect and implement urban green spaces, taking into account the phenomenon of littering.

The real protagonists of this process of change are the citizens themselves, systematically generating a new approach to sustainable urban care.

Not surprisingly, green areas are those in which the highest percentage of correct behavior is observed with respect to the management of small waste.

The metropolitan area of Reggio Calabria ranks first in terms of quantity of urban greenery per 100,000 inhabitants with approximately 1063 hectares, followed by Cagliari and Venice.

The study concludes the

# IoLaButtoLì

campaign

against the abandonment of small waste, promoted by Save The Planet and JTI Italia together with the collaboration of the social cooperative agency Pensieri & Colori and the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea .

On the occasion of the Forum,

the first interactive Anti-Littering Manifesto

is announced

, aimed at citizens, businesses and local administrations

to sign the joint commitment for a sustainable future.
