Seventy years spent together, divided only by Covid, which first took him away and then a few days later she.

Margaret and Derek Firth, a 91-year-old husband and wife, had been in love since they were 14: together they grew up, had five children, and later 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They passed away at Manchester's Trafford General Hospital last week, but were able to see each other in the hospital before they died.

There is also a snapshot of the moment of their last meeting, taken by their daughter Barbara, who portrays them holding hands, in two contingent beds. They have become a symbol, moving the world.

Their story of love and tenderness, which has recorded several shares on the web, was told by the Manchester Evening News.

Married since 1950, the two celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year.

Margaret had trained as a machinist and later worked as a cleaner, while Derek was initially a butcher and ended his working life as a warehouse worker.

When Derek joined Margaret for a final goodbye, according to her daughter, she asked him "Where have you been?".

"From that moment - says Barbara - she seemed to be better, the meeting seemed to have given her a push. It was a rather sad moment, but at the same time it was really nice that they were there together".

The daughter explains that her father probably contracted Covid precisely by going to visit her mother, "but there was no way to even think that he would not have gone to see her".
