Two men were hit by a car in Frankfurt am Main and fatally injured.
The 38-year-old driver may have caught the two passers-by crossing an intersection, the police said, according to the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung".
The two pedestrians were 31 and 40 years old.
The driver was seriously injured.
"There is no evidence that it was not an accident," said a spokesman.
According to »FAZ«, the accident site is now being examined by an expert.
The police consider it likely that the driver was traveling at high speed.
The car had overturned after it had caught the two men and was left on the road.
The exact location of the accident is still unclear
All three people involved in the accident were first taken to surrounding hospitals.
The clash occurred in the afternoon at a wide intersection near Frankfurt's Südbahnhof.
The police said it was still unclear exactly where the pedestrians were.
There are contradicting information about the course of the accident, and witness statements are evaluated.
Blood was taken from the driver and tests were carried out to determine whether drugs were involved.
The police said that the driver was being investigated for negligent homicide.
