The Ikea “Förnuftig” air filter does not help against corona viruses, but is intended to ensure clean air.

The design has met with criticism from some online users.

  • Ikea offers a new air filter.

  • The built-in fleece filter does not help against coronaviruses and their mutations, but should ensure healthier air.

  • Social media users like the design - criticism still hails.

Munich - Customers can work up a sweat when assembling Ikea furniture - some start reading the instructions.

The furniture stores have now added an air purifier to their range to remove bad odors.

In Ikea fashion, the new filter device was named in Swedish: “Förnuftig”, which translates as “reasonable” in German.

On Instagram, users reacted mockingly: “Well then, buy it all!

Then you can receive visits again and the windows can even remain closed ”, teased one user.

Another, however, said: "Sounds good at first, but the performance is simply too weak."

Ikea air filter "Förnuftig": Instagram users split - it does not help against Corona

In terms of functionality, the device is designed not only for odors but also for pollutants such as dust, smoke, pollen and chemicals.

However, the filter cannot do anything against the currently rampant corona virus.

When asked, Ikea spokeswoman Isolde Debus-Spangenberg explains: "The air filter was developed at a time when Corona wasn't even an issue." The device therefore does not claim to filter viruses out of the air.

According to Ikea, the device can still contribute to a healthier home: For example, cooking residues or gaseous chemicals such as formaldehyde are bad for health.

The furniture giant does not want to allow simple ventilation or cleaning - that only helps "to a certain extent".

Ikea air filter Förnuftig: design resembles a loudspeaker

The design of the air filter - it resembles a loudspeaker - received praise and criticism on Facebook, Twitter and Co.

Instead of membranes, the much discussed fabric network conceals an exchangeable fleece filter.

#DidYouKnow indoor air pollution can be worse than it is outdoors?

At IKEA we believe everyone deserves access to clean (indoor) air, which is why we're launching FÖRNUFTIG, an affordable and high performing air purifier for the many people.

While a satisfied user gave the filter a "five-minute price", numerous Twitter users were bothered by the fabric design.

"Nice thing.

Only difficult when it comes to pollen that sticks to the fabric.

Has a reason why there are usually such plastic bombers, "said one user.

She suggested simply omitting the reference.

A cat lover also followed this idea on Twitter: "What makes me a little tired is the fact that when it came to the design, it seemed that nobody realized how close it was to a scratching post."

Ikea: Filters are supposed to help with allergies and poor sleep

Ikea justifies its development with particles in the air: “Nowadays we also spend more time inside, which can lead to allergic reactions and poor sleep, among other things,” writes the furniture store.

In addition to the option of placing the air filter on the floor in the bedroom, for example, it can also be mounted on the wall.

A handle is designed to make it easier for customers to move to other rooms - during the day, for example, to the kitchen.

While Ikea is increasingly investing in the development of its own electrical appliances in the midst of the second corona wave, the size of the branches could also change.

Before a test run of these changes can be started, the Ikea stores are still closed - but sales continue anyway.

Not all customers are happy with it.

“Ikea charges me ten euros for being able to pick up the thing myself,” complained a buyer on Twitter.
