Global infections of coronavirus

have been reduced by half since the beginning of 2021

, from five million in the first week of January to 2.6 million in the past seven days, the director general of the World Health Organization highlighted this Monday ( WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"This shows that basic public health measures work, even in the presence of new variants" of the coronavirus, Tedros said at a press conference.

The Ethiopian expert also stressed that

last week the lowest number of new cases was recorded since October

, before the third wave began in regions such as America and Europe.

"The important thing now is to see how we respond to the current trend because

the fire is not completely out

, we have simply reduced its size and if we stop fighting it it could increase again," he warned.

"Every day in which there is a reduction in infections means that lives are saved, suffering is avoided and the pressure on health systems is reduced a little more," Tedros said.

Origin of the virus

The WHO mission that visited China believes that

in December 2019 the coronavirus was more widespread than previously thought in the province of Wuhan

, the US network CNN reported on Sunday.

A WHO mission traveled to Wuhan to study the origin of the virus.

The director of that mission, Peter Ben Embarek, told the chain that Chinese scientists presented to the mission 174 cases of coronavirus registered in Wuhan and its surroundings and that were reported in December 2019. Of that set, 100 were confirmed through of laboratory and the rest by clinical diagnosis of the patient.

He added that this increased number of cases, probably serious cases, discovered by Chinese doctors early on, could mean that the disease affected more than 1,000 people in Wuhan in that December.
