Kurdish animal rights activists have released six Syrian brown bears into the wild in northern Iraq, but instead of thanking them, they have attacked them.

On the other hand, they cannot be blamed: the bears were released from the cages in a ceremony that included dozens of participants, reporters and photographers, who came to document the event and frightened the bears precisely at the happiest moment in their lives.

The Reuters news agency reports that at a ceremony held last Thursday by an American-Kurdish rescue organization, the bears were released to their new home in the Gara Mountains. After the activists opened the cages, chaos ensued. The bears panicked, pounced on the terrified spectators and fled. .

The Syrian brown bear currently exists in the wild only in Turkey, the Caucasus, northern Iraq and western Iran.

It is endangered in all of these areas, and the population is shrinking due to the reduction of its habitat, and due to human influence, mainly through illegal hunting.

Today, the great danger posed to the Syrian brown bear is due to the capture of the puppies for bringing them to circuses in Eastern Europe.

The bears, some of which were rescued from captivity from people's homes, were released as part of a plan to save them from extinction.

According to the local Department of Bear Conservation, Syrian brown bears are considered an endangered subspecies due to illegal and captive hunting, particularly in Iraq.

The head of the organization, Bland Prabkani, told the Shafek news agency: "The bears were brought from areas in southern Iraq. Some were bought while others were handed over to us by their owners."

The rescue organization rescued and released bears in two more cases.

In a case that occurred in 2018, journalists were attacked by three bears after they were released in the same mountain range.

Similar to today, Mr Parbakani said at the time that the bears were apparently frightened when they were surrounded by a large group of spectators, including communication crews.

Two journalists were lightly injured in this incident.
