Strict confinement, massive teleworking and closed schools: the year 2020 had, at least in its first part, all the elements to strongly accelerate the use of the Internet in France.
This “Covid effect” is confirmed by data from Médiamétrie, published on Wednesday.
The institute notes that the number of French Internet users (53 million) has not increased by one inch in 2020. But the connection time has experienced a boost: it is now 2h25 per day , 20 minutes more than in 2019.
This average hides strong disparities over time (+ 40% of connection time to the first confinement, at 3:11 a day) and according to age groups.
15-24 year olds are on average connected 4:23 a day (+ 24% in one year), a figure that has climbed to 6 hours in the spring, distance learning requires.
One third of the most connected adolescents and young adults surf 7.16 hours a day.
