Covid: half of Italy risks orange, Abruzzo towards red

2021-02-17T19:22:13.427Z

Work is being carried out on the 'new' CTS, control room also for the economic impact. The bulletin of the Ministry of Health: 12,074 new cases, 369 victims and a positive rate of 4.1% (ANSA)

With the variants that have been around for some time also in Italy and the infections that show no sign of decreasing, from Sunday almost half of the country risks ending up in orange, with Abruzzo that seems destined even in the red zone.

However, the certification will come only with the publication of the new monitoring data, while the new executive led by Mario Draghi is already working to 'streamline' the Technical Scientific Committee and create a control room for ministers that takes into account not only the aspect normative of the measures but, at the same time, also of the economic one to avoid a new "skiing case".

Also on the table are the new measures that will have to be taken as early as next week when the decree prohibiting the movement between regions expires, already extended for the first time until 25 February.

The wait is therefore all aimed at next Friday when the new monitoring data of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità will be published.

The regions most at risk are Lombardy (where four municipalities are now in lockdown), Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Marche.

The most delicate situation is that of Abruzzo where there are already two provinces in the red zone, those of Pescara and Chieti.

From Friday, however, there is a serious risk that the entire region will overshoot the Rt 1.25 index (the limit to pass into the red), even in the face of the record of hospitalizations of the last two months recorded today.

On the day in which the bulletin recorded 12,074 new cases, 369 victims and a positive rate of 4.1%, it is not only the data on new hospitalized patients, which is increasing, that are worrying, but also the diffusion of variants which, according to the words scientists should be immediately isolated.

Yesterday, for example, a very rare strain of the virus (just 100 cases in the world) was found in Naples, which appeared for the first time in Italy.

Today it was Basilicata that identified the English variant - already widespread in Lombardy and other regions - while in Tuscany there would be a case of a Brazilian variant, as already established in Veneto.

Again according to the bulletin of the Ministry of Health, a total of 294,411 swabs (molecular and antigenic) were carried out in the last 24 hours in Italy.

Currently positive people in Italy are 388,864 (-4,822), while the total number of victims has risen to 94,540.

A total of 2,268,253 people recovered or discharged (+16,519 compared to yesterday).

The patients admitted to intensive care for Covid in Italy are 2,043, 31 fewer than yesterday despite the 113 entries in the last 24 hours.

The people hospitalized with symptoms are instead 18,274, 189 fewer than yesterday.
