Dutch doctors warn against the so-called "avocado hand" - more and more people need treatment.

There are so many victims every year.

  • Are you a big avocado fan too?

Then you might be interested in the new phenomenon of the "avocado hands".

  • What sounds funny is worrying medical professionals.

  • Doctors are now warning: If you make this mistake, there is a risk of "avocado hands".

At first you think of a deformation or discoloration of the hand, but far from it: “Avocado hands” do not mean anything like that.

It's about the injuries * that people cause themselves when processing avocados.

And it seems that this happens far more often than some people suspect.

So often that the Association of Plastic Surgeons in the Netherlands is now getting involved -

and urgently warns of “avocado hands”

.

The Dutch doctors said that more and more people had to be treated who were seriously injured when cutting the fruit

.

The problem is primarily due to the choice of the wrong tool: Many try to separate the hard core from the pulp with a sharp knife.

The knife can slip and injure fingers or the ball of the hand.

"We often see nerves in the fingers being damaged or even cut," the editorial network Germany (RND) quotes the Amsterdam surgeon Annekatrien van de Kar. Even permanent damage is possible.

Around 8,000 "avocado victims" annually in the USA - no figures for Europe yet

Doctors attribute the increasing frequency of hand injuries to the increasing popularity of avocados as a food, which is partly due to the healthy fats it contains.

In Europe, it has not yet been documented how many people are injured each year by processing avocados.

But in the USA there is such a list of “avocado victims”:

around 8,000 people there annually who need treatment for such an injury,

as the

reports.

In order to prevent the injury, it is important for the Dutch Association of Plastic Surgeons

to remove the core with a spoon (promotional link) - and never with a knife

.

In addition, there is a demand for supermarkets and producers to warn of injuries on the packaging of avocados, as the RND informs.
