She was a fixture in West Berlin's subculture.
In the mid-1980s, Françoise Cactus founded the band Lolitas there, which soon became famous beyond Berlin with its high-speed, punk rock'n'roll and French lyrics.
Cactus drummed and sang.
This combination of tasks, which is unusual in rock, she took over from 1993 with the Duo Stereo Total, which she ran with her partner Brezel Göring.
The band was known for their minimalist, over-the-top pop sound and explicit lyrics.
Cactus sang mostly in German, but with a heavy French accent.
The best-known songs include "Love for three" and "I'm naked".
Françoise Cactus grew up in France and moved to Berlin in 1986, where she first worked as a layout artist for »taz«.
She not only wrote songs, but also books and radio plays.
She also worked as a presenter for Radio Eins.
The station now also announced the death of the musician and author.
Françoise Cactus is said to have died on Wednesday morning in her Berlin apartment of complications from breast cancer.
She was 57 years old.
