Frankfurt: 20-year-old convicted after riots on Opernplatz

Last July, thousands celebrated on Frankfurt's Opernplatz, then there were attacks on the police. Now the district court has passed its first judgment - and recommended a book to the accused.

The serious riots on Opernplatz in Frankfurt am Main were around seven months ago.

Now the city's district court has pronounced the verdict in the first trial of the riots.

A 20-year-old was sentenced by the juvenile court for serious breach of the peace, attempted assault and an attack on police officers to 50 working hours, a court spokeswoman said.

In addition, the student who has no criminal record has to pay 500 euros to Kinderhilfe and read the book "Deutschland im Blaulicht" by police officer Tania Kambouri.

The defendant had admitted to having thrown a glass bottle at police officers in July 2020.

After his arrest, he was found to have more than one per thousand alcohol in his blood.

Against this background, he let himself be carried away into the act, he said.

Six more proceedings are pending at the Frankfurt district court.

The negotiation dates have not yet been set.

The accused are between 18 and 31 years old and mostly live in Frankfurt.

You are said to have been involved in the riots in the city center on the night of July 19, 2020 and threw bottles at police officers.

3500 people celebrated in the open air

The riots occurred on the night of July 19th.

Last summer, with the clubs and discotheques closed, the central opera square had developed into an open-air party zone.

On the weekend of the incident, up to 3,500 people initially celebrated peacefully.

In the early hours of the morning, there were attacks on officers and their vehicles.

According to the public prosecutor's office, five police officers are said to have been injured.

In addition, rioters are said to have caused property damage of at least 14,600 euros.

The city then issued a ban on entering the Opera Square on weekends from midnight until morning.

Numerous police officers were on duty in the city center and on the square.

There were no further incidents.

The Frankfurt public prosecutor's office subsequently investigated 15 suspects.
