The father of rapper Nicki Minaj was hit by a car and fatally injured, and the driver fled.
Now the police have arrested a suspect.
The 70-year-old is accused of having a hit and miss after a fatal accident and covering up evidence, reported the television station NBC and the AP news agency on Wednesday, citing the responsible police authority.
The man who lives in Mineola on Long Island near the metropolis of New York and who, according to police files, had not previously committed any criminal offenses, could be identified because of his old car, among other things.
Last week, he is said to have hit Minaj's 64-year-old father with his car and then fled.
The musician's father was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
“He was perfectly aware of what happened,” a police spokesman said of the arrested suspect: “He got out of the car and looked at the deceased, got into his car and made the conscious decision to drive away instead of dialing 911 instead of calling an ambulance for the man, ”said the announcer.
The suspect's lawyer has so far not commented on the allegations.
Nicki Minaj himself did not initially comment on the incident either.
The rapper became known in 2010 with the album »Pink Friday«.
