The recent icy cold in parts of Germany will give way to significantly milder weather in the coming days, according to a forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD).
According to the DWD, it gets up to 20 degrees on the weekend.
On Thursday and Friday, the maximum values are initially between 4 degrees in the northeast and 16 degrees in the southwest, it said.
On Saturday, the temperatures in the south, where sun is expected, will scratch the 20-degree mark.
At the sea, the DWD expects up to 9 degrees.
"For a long time, high air pressure over Scandinavia also dominated the weather in Germany by blocking Atlantic lows and sending arctic polar air into the country from the east," said the weather service.
“But now the high has weakened and has moved on to Eastern Europe.
As a result, the way for strong lows from the Atlantic was clear again. "
Lots of sun, especially from the Black Forest to the Alps
According to the forecast, on Thursday it will initially be generally bright to cloudy, in the southern half of Germany it will sometimes be foggy for longer.
From the Black Forest to the edge of the Alps, the sun can show itself longer.
From noon rain is expected from the northwest to the Weser and Fulda.
On Friday it remains south of the Main up to the foothills of the Alps as well as in the northeast further heavily cloudy with some rain or drizzle in some areas.
Otherwise the sky loosens up more, especially in the Alps the sun shows up more often.
On Saturday the sky in the north loosens only slowly, otherwise it is increasingly clear to cloudy.
Environmental agencies see no risk of flooding
In Thuringia, the State Environment Agency recently did not expect that floods would be feared because of the thaw.
The increase due to the snow melt should only be moderate, it said.
On Tuesday, experts in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony did not classify the situation as critical.
While there were significantly fewer slippery road accidents on Wednesday, the winter weather of the past few days kept the emergency services busy.
In Weimar, a listed building collapsed - possibly because it could not withstand the snow load on the roof.
In Waren an der Müritz, employees of the municipal building yard cut large pieces of ice from the lake.
This measure was intended to protect a jetty from ice pressure.
