(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 18 - The large distribution chain Iper has announced that it will no longer sell foie gras: the last stocks have been sold and will no longer be purchased.

Iper was the last chain in Italy that still sold the French specialty, produced by inflicting severe suffering on the geese.

This was announced in a press release by the NGO Being Animal.

The association has launched the #ViaDagliScaffali campaign with the aim of encouraging large-scale retail trade to access foie gras sales.

Iper is the 13th chain of Italian supermarkets to join the campaign.

"At the end of 2019, after a few years from the launch of our campaign, 'Iper la grande i' was the last sign of the large distribution to still have it on sale. 27 thousand signed the petition, thousands made themselves heard via email and on social networks and with phone the offices.

"Thanks to the mobilization of so many people - concludes Esseere Animali - in recent years we have managed to achieve great success: 12,800 supermarkets belonging to the main brands in the sector have chosen not to sell this extremely cruel product. To date we consider it practically absent in Italian supermarkets, but obviously we will continue to monitor it ". (ANSA).
