Covid-19: more variants but not always an outbreak of cases? Véran wonders

How to explain that contaminations do not necessarily increase where the variants of SARS-CoV-2, estimated to be more contagious, circulate strongly?

"Honesty forces me to tell you that for the moment we do not know how to explain it", recognized Olivier Véran this Thursday at the end of the afternoon.

The Minister of Health was speaking at a traditional weekly press conference on Covid-19.

It is clear that in Moselle, where the so-called “South African” and “Brazilian” variants represent more than 30% of new cases, the daily number of new cases is stable or even slightly decreasing.

In Île-de-France, where the so-called “British” strain could currently represent more than half of the contaminations according to a study by Inserm, this number has decreased slightly for ten days.

Other cautious European countries

Of course, there are also territories where one or the other of these variants is circulating strongly and where the incidence rate, namely the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past week, is exploding.

It is the bus in the metropolis of Dunkirk and in Mayotte, for example.

At the national level, the so-called “British variant” represents 36% of positive tests, and the other two, 5%.

But "it is also clear that a high rate of variants is not necessarily accompanied, at least not at the start, by an increase in contaminations" in certain departments, therefore indicated Olivier Véran.

The Minister of Health added that he had spoken about it with several of his European counterparts.

"Some of them are in the same situation as us," he said.

These questions are therefore not limited to the French borders.
